Desensitized By Miley

Miss Destiny Hope Cyrus.

She has been on the tip of everyone’s tongue ever since her shocking and disastrously jarring performance at MTV Video Music Awards stole the show a few months back. She has been nit-picked and critiqued beyond compare by every entertainment/culture commentary website for just about everything: for being a racist slut to being a regular rebellious teen who just wants to be liberated from her Disney days. However with everything that has happened, I find myself feeling quite honestly, blasé and apathetic towards everything she does now.

Of course like anyone who saw the VMA performance, I was floored by her and it was not in any sense good. My expression can be likened with the reactions of Will Smith’s family (though it is allegedly a reaction towards Lady Gaga’s performance, but I digress).

Miley ticked every box in order to make sure it was a “strategic hot mess“. She followed the ranks of previous pop queens who were on the verge of epic stardom and had also seized the opportunity to shock and awe audiences, in order to cement their positions in pop music history. For instance, a young Madonna circa 1984 performing “Like a Virgin” while sauntering and rolling around on the VMA stage in a wedding dress. And, who could forget when Britney Spears appeared on stage in a scantily clad outfit performing “I’m a Slave 4 U” with a giant yellow python on her shoulders? The examples I’ve given of past VMA performances were all in chronological order, with Madonna being the daring pioneering woman to Miley continuing the “tradition”. Not only is it arranged according to the time frame, but the level of absurdity and hyper sexualized content also became incrementally over the top as we the audience become more and more desensitized with each year. We become immune to the nastiness and vulgarity of how pop stars these days behave or present themselves, because it is all just a routine of out-shining and outdoing each other. But I think we can all agree that Miley’s performance was the most shocking and excited the most controversy out of any female or male pop star in recent memory.

Next, I’m sure everyone has heard about Sinead O’ Connor’s open letter to Miley Cyrus. I did read the nearly 1000 word essay, that was brimming with motherly advice and concern for her, but instead of respectfully accepting the letter as it was, Miley took to Twitter to compare the veteran singer to Hollywood’s latest casualty- Amanda Bynes. Understandably, O’ Connor was angered and criticized her for making light of mental illness.  This debacle makes for a very charming nugget of “a day in the life of Miley Cyrus” but it really is insignificant if you saw the pictures that she posed for Terry Richardson as it surfaced right after the altercation with the “Nothing Compares 2 U” crooner. The pictures, as expected from the notorious photographer, left nothing to the imagination and the question of taste and decency was nowhere in sight.

The reoccurring message of the open letter was to “stop prostituting yourself”. Harsh but honest words. Sinead basically wrote the letter in response to when Miley told a Rolling Stone that the inspiration behind the video of “Wrecking Ball” was her iconic video for “Nothing Compares 2 U“, “but, like, the most modern version”. By modern, I think she meant more nudity and sexual connotation. Again, controversy was swirling around the twerking pop wild child and she defended her video, explaining that it was a portrayal of her vulnerability and devastation that she suffered from her separation with her ex-fiancée, Liam Hemsworth. I think whatever hurt or pain she felt can be portrayed in a more subdued manner if she ( or executives) wanted to, but she chose the other route because it generates more buzz and Youtube views and in turn more revenue.

I am a child of MTV therefore I can vouch for myself and say that I am not a prude, but I don’t think whatever she did in “Wrecking Ball” can be artistically justified.

Some might argue that whatever Miley does is on her own volition and no one else, and I believe that, but it is foolish to think that she does not have  a handler to  persuade and nudge her. You can even label what she is doing as empowerment, rebellion, successful, different, bold, disgusting, unsavory, but some might disagree with you. If you were to ask me however, I would simply shrug and say “What’s new?”

Best Dressed: 2013 Emmy Awards

Television’s biggest night returns as the 65th annual Emmy Awards took place on Sunday, Sept 22. Emmy Awards, which is a ceremony that recognizes the talents in the television industry, has brought in our favorite TV stars all-together in a night full of glamour. Even though some of the results might have had TV fans toss away their remote controls out of anger, it’s the fashion that really got us excited! We have handpicked our Top 10 best dressed of the night; check out who made it to our list.

rs_634x1024-130922164108-634.Elizabeth-Moss-EMMYS-jmd-092213_copyElisabeth Moss

Ever since the Mad Men star ditched her long brunette for a shorter and blonde hairdo, Elisabeth Moss possessed another kind of persona and it certainly reflected in her style. Ms. Moss nailed it in the black and white Andrew Gn dress. She had accessorized the dress with vintage Neil Lane Jewelry and completed the look with red lips for a hint of color.

zooey-deschanelZooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel finally ditched her “adorkable” style and opted for something more mature and sexy. The silver-blue J. Mendel gown is certainly a departure from what she had always worn on the red carpet. The thigh-high slit on the dress gave Zooey more sex appeal which perfectly showcased her matching silver platform pumps. She accessorized the look with an Edie Parker clutch and a massive Chanel gemstone ring, perfectly placed on her right hand.

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - ArrivalsKit Harington

That’s right! Kit Harington is the only guy from the Emmys that made into our best dressed list. Kit looked dapper in the three-piece getup where he matched it with a black skinny tie and David Yurman cufflinks. His long hair was slicked back and it sort of complimented the bad boy persona that he seemed to carry out.

Linda Cardellini who is nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her work on Mad Men is certainly outstanding on the red carpet. She looks stunning in the fuchsia silk gown by Donna Karan Atelier. Not everyone can pull off the busy rose shaped and crepe details of the dress but she managed to. The side-swept waves and triangle earrings from Irene Neuwirth are just the right amount of perfect as it let the gown take the spotlight.

Christina-HendricksChristina Hendricks

Lena Dunham, please take note. This is how you show-off your curves at the red carpet! Christina Hendricks’ famously hourglass shape is perfectly accentuated in the black dress by Christian Siriano. She finished the look with a sparkling Edie Parker clutch. The 30’s inspired hair together with the emerald earrings and red lips complemented the whole look and Christina has never looked better!

Girls-star-Allison-Williams_gallery_primaryAllison Williams

In the mix of embellishment and sparkling dresses on the red carpet, Girls’ Allison Williams stands out in a simple deep blue gown by Ralph Lauren which debuted on the New York Fashion Week runway just weeks ago. Adding just a few of Fred Leighton jewelry together with her long wavy hair and nude lips, Allison looks effortlessly chic.

The winner of Lead Actress in a Drama Series is dazzling in a nude Armani Prive gown. What makes the whole look more interesting is that she paired the sexy plunging neckline dress with a shorter hair, which she then revealed to Lena Dunham that it’s a faux bob. Faux or not, we love the bob and it certainly gave her some edge. Maybe it’s time for a new haircut?

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - ArrivalsKerry Washington

Oh we wanted you to win Kerry Washington! Although our favorite Scandal star did not take home the Emmy award, she certainly made it onto our best dressed list.  The cream and white gown embellished with flower appliqués and hints of gold is from the Marchesa Spring 2014 collection. Kerry kept the accessories simple with just a touch of Fred Leighton Jewelry and Edie Parker clutch. Her hair was also styled into a simple wave. And the result, she looks like a princess from a fairytale world.

Our favorite teen style icon wowed us again in a beautiful dress by Delponzo. The 13 year old actress is the 4th Mad Men actress who made it into our list! Kiernan always looked pulled-together and managed to blow us away every time she steps out during an event. The colorful floral detail on the dress plus her cute ponytail is very age appropriate. It is refreshing to see Kiernan dressing her age especially when most of the teenagers out there are trying really hard to look mature.

rs_634x1024-130922165820-634.Rose-Byrne-EMMYS-jmd-092213_copyRose Byrne

Our Emmy’s best dressed go to none other than Rachel Byrne! We at Culture Vulture applaud those who take fashion risk. While this pale pink gown from Calvin Klein Collection is simple, the plain design is what makes it risky to grace at the red carpet. It is modern and has a lot of sex appeal to it. The two piece dress shows off the actress’ midriff, and the silver Jimmy Choo clutch perfectly matched the color of her dress. She styled her noticeably lighter hair into polished waves and finished the look with dark pink lips.

So what do you think of our best dressed picks at the Emmys? Do you agree? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below!
